Summary

Deanna Paul, a journalist from The Washington Post, writes an analytical piece discussing the feasibility of President Donald Trump's threat to circumvent Congressional restrictions and go forth with his plan to build a wall between Mexico and the United States. Not only does the article show the statutes present that give substance to the threat, but also provides future implications that it may have. The reallocation of funds and the seizure of property from private owners creates worry that is nation wide.

Three Ideas to Look Into
  1. Implications of Reallocating Funding from Army Civil Works Projects
  2. Ending the Government Shutdown
  3. Military Seizure of Private Property
  4. History of Presidential Declarations of National Emergency

Piece of Popular Culture
  1. Superhero Films (i.e. Avengers: Infinity War, Man of Steel)
Why This Piece

When looking at Trump and his threat to declare a national emergency to circumvent the walls of Congress, it reminded me of the angry tantrums that supervillains throw when their plans are thwarted in many superhero films and comics. When his plan did not seem to be as clear cut as he wanted, he started threatening larger scale repercussions if he does not get his way.

Ideas for the Post

I want to utilize the post to first show the feasibility of the threat that Donald Trump has placed and underline some of the statutes that give him power to do so. Subsequently, I want to summarize a brief history on which situations previous Presidents thought were serious enough to call of a national emergency. Riding this idea that Trump's threat might have some substance and how he's working the system to make his wishes come true, I will proceed to compare him to supervillains seen in various superhero works (especially Lex Luthor as provided in the linked article above).
