In-Class Exercise: Technology
The future of four technological inventions:
Trains (Travel)
The next step for this would be rather than transporting a set number of people in groups over and over again, you would have a system where each person could travel at their own time through a constantly running system. This takes away the requirements of operators and conductors, takes away the requirements of schedules and relying on the compliance of everyone to run the system. Something like a single person, tube transport that just whisks the individual from one station and deposits them at the target station would function better. However, this would have to have a way to do this without taking up physical space. There is a lot of long distance travel, so having people travel that far would require multiple tube systems. People would have to live in a place that houses all their needs in a closer system, making this more practical.
Augmented Reality
This is the next step for cell phones. It would take the concept of Google Glass and use it in a less shitty way. They had the right idea, but it was executed very poorly and was too early for its age. We had just gotten into a generation of smart phones, we weren't ready to make a leap to augmented reality. This takes the practicality of having a computer in our pockets to just overlaying it on our world. Hands free, convenient, and quick, this would be the future of cell phones.
Sports
Sports have conserved the forms that they have had for years. The Olympics still have the same concept that the ancient Greeks used. I think the next step in sports would be to reinvent the games to use technology. There are lots of movies, shows, etc. with these ideas. Soccer games where the playing field isn't two dimensional, feats of strength that incorporate both technology and ability. The current technology in sports is optimizing the best shoes or best form to perform the best. Next step would be inventing technology and integrating it with player skill to create a dynamic relationship between brains and brawn.
Education
The new tech in education is utilizing the fact that everyone has laptops. The flipped classroom and learning individually is becoming very prominent in higher education. This is slowly removing the teaching role of teachers. I think a future step, not necessarily the next, is removing learning all in all. Computerizing memory and just having it stored in executable files would remove the raw information memorization that is needed. All you would have to learn is using the information, which wouldn't require school but practice in the real world in apprenticeships and such.
